Deaf Citizen Campaign

We must spread the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) in all levels of society to ensure full citizenship for the Deaf.

Often the human rights of the Deaf are violated. Whether for discrimination in government agencies or companies that do not hire them, either because they are poorly attended, in offices and trade, because there is no person permitted to do so, or worse, as happened recently in Paraná in the arbitrary and illegal arrest in 12 days of the deaf Alexandre Pontes, unjustly accused of attempted robbery.

The full exercise of citizenship of the Deaf necessarily involves knowledge of Libras by  listeners (police, judiciary, government agencies, private companies, hospitals, health and other sectors of civil society). The LIBRAS É LEGAL PROJECT already has a working tool to assist in teaching and disseminating knowledge of the language with the LIBRAS KIT.

Why, when an American or Argentine comes to our country, there is always an interpreter, or at least someone who has notions of foreign language to communicate with him?

The deaf is a Brazilian citizen and has the right to be welcomed anywhere he goes. Why LIBRAS is not included in the scholar curriculum if children and young people learn foreign languages?

If listeners do not know LIBRAS, the deaf will continue to be a forgotten citizen. The Brazilian Civil Society needs to know Libras to ensure full inclusion and citizenship of the deaf.

FENEIS together with the Libras é Legal Project embrace this campaign so that deaf people can exercise their citizenship as Brazilians.

Testimony

"I love soccer! But me and other deaf people complain about television programs. The ones of sports, politicians, news, movies and soap opera do not have interpreters, which is impossible to participate of life!

We are living in a globalized world where all people must have equal rights and opportunities to grow.

We are seen as poor people, and we only help them thinking of a heavenly reward, but people do not really involved in our cause.

Deaf people also need to go to school, to be part of the world, to participate in social life and not just stay at home receiving basic care.

I believe it is a necessary debate about the reality of the deaf, because society needs to be informed. "
